Located half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is is home to a handful of more location-specific AVAs, from the enormous Paso Robles to York Mountain. It is close to the Pacific coastline by the Santa Lucia Hills. The county is subject to similar climatic influences as its northern counterparts, Sonoma and Napa. San Luis Obispo is characterized by shallow loam and calcareous soil with ample deposits of limestone and calcium. Being such a large area, vineyard owners see everything from sandy loam to clay rich in volcanic deposits across the county.

Napa Valley is America’s most celebrated wine region. It was officially recognized for its high-quality wines and distinctive regional terroir when it became California’s first American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1981. Within Napa Valley AVA there are 16 Sub-AVAs. It is sandwiched between two mountain ranges: the Vaca to the east and the Mayacamas to the west. Napa’s climate zone is Mediterranean. The area sees long, hot, and dry summer days with cool evenings. Similarly, there are warm, dry days and cool nights in the autumn. Winters are typically mild with rainfall. Spring is temperate with a rainy period early in the season. There are also varying microclimates throughout the valley. The region’s complex soil patterns range from gravelly loam and clay to thin, rocky soils. More than half of the soils that exist on earth can be found in the Napa Valley.
